Marc also asked if notes could be set to play longer or shorter without having to change instruments.

Traditionally, the duration of each note is interpreted as the sustain on each note. Many DAWs show this on the piano rolls as rectangular bars. This is not the same philosophy as tracker based sequencers, from which Oscalate draws inspiration. Trackers notes were originally triggered events to turn on a sample and play the sample until it reached the end of the sample or was stopped. As trackers became more sophisticated, looping was introduced to produce notes of variable duration.

I agree with Marc and often find that I would like some notes to sustain longer than the instrument is configured for. However, this will require some thought and planning to implement and integrate into the grid sequencer.

For the moment, we will have to wait a little bit longer for this feature.

Marc made an excellent recommendation regarding volume in the app. He commented that some of the instruments were very loud. This is a serious safety concern. Some parameters in the app (like filter settings) can produce resonances or feedback that get very loud. If this happens when you are using earphones or headphones, your hearing is put at risk.

So, as of version 1.08, an audio limiter is enabled in the app and a warning about protecting your hearing is shown on startup. The limiter can be disabled in the settings menu, at your discretion, but it should not interfere with normal use of the app at moderate volume levels.

Please be careful and protect your hearing.

The first instrument request is from Marc. He asked -

"Can i recommend some royalty free phonk-y cowbell sounds to use?"

I had never heard of the phonk style before, so after a quick search on youtube, I found a number of video tutorials on creating a phonk cowbell from scratch (How to Make a Phonk Cowbell from Scratch by Sam Smyers and HOW TO MAKE A PHONK COWBELL (FROM SCRATCH) by thayerperiod).

The phonk cowbell is not a traditional cowbell, it is a synthesized cowbell originally created on the Roland TR-808 drum machine in 1980. It originally did poorly commercially, but developed a following and widespread use.

I have created a version of the 808 cowbell for Oscalate and three versions of it are now included in instrument-pack-03.

Have a listen to the result.
